Cloudy with a chance of data – WPC 2016

Tech journalist Bill Magee is in Toronto, reporting for CompanyNet from Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference. Here’s his take on Satya Nadella’s opening Vision Keynote.

“Fresh” from celebrating the Euro 2016 grand final with my new Portugese pals, it’s back to business at this year’s Microsoft WPC with Satya Nadella’s Vision Keynote here in Toronto.

The software giant’s CEO told twenty thousand partner-delegates from 144 countries that his number one priority is digital transformation.

To cut to the chase — more will be achieved in the next five years compared with the previous three decades.

Digital and physical experiences are undoubtedly undergoing inextricably-linked “accelerations” coupled with a wiring and rewiring of business models.

Here it has to be all about empowering an organisation’s employees whilst simultaneously and optimizing everyday commercial processes to engage with and meet customer needs.

The opportunities before each and every one of us are unprecedented: “We are lucky to be involved in information technology as the world is digitising … where for the first time literally everything will be connected. That truly is the opportunity in front of us as the entire GDP is shaped.”

Everyone has the opportunity to tap into this revolution where at its core is handling data to help customers achieve their ambitions. In such a scenario, the key is the “intelligent cloud” where modern IT tools are tailored to specific business processes and needs.

The next phase of the intelligent cloud platform is cognitive capabilities and services. In Microsoft’s case this means, of course, the Cortana Intelligence Suite.

One groundbreaking Microsoft collaboration revealed is with McDonald’s, to dramatically improve its drive-thru experience using voice recognition and natural language processing.

Why do intranets fail?

Every major software project is an investment that carries with it some level of risk. Before you set out, it’s important to understand where it could fall down, and what steps you can take to ensure its success.

The biggest problem for an intranet is poor take-up of the new system. Even the best intranet is pointless if your staff fail to adopt it as their own. There isn’t one simple answer to the challenge of user adoption – but if you get a number of key factors right, then it will help the rest fall into place. Intranets can fall at the first hurdle because they fail to meet the needs of users and of your
business.

Know what you want

You need to start with a very clear picture of what you want. If you’re replacing your intranet with a more modern one, then you might already have a good idea of the features users are crying out for. Either way, it’s vital to define the requirements for your new intranet first. Don’t think in terms of features – your requirements should be the ‘questions’ to which the features of an intranet are the ‘answers’. An annual conference for infromation management professionals, AIIM Forum UK gave us a chance to share our new Client Information Management system, created in close collaboration with leading independent firm Hymans Robertson. You can read more about the event in our previous blog post.

Getting the whole picture with intuitive Client Information Management

We were proud to participate in this year’s AIIM Forum UK, the annual conference for information management professionals.

Held in London, the event brought together records managers, expert technologists and a range of suppliers through keynotes, break-out sessions and an exhibition space. We shared our insights and advice, and – with our customer Hymans Robertson – showcased our latest innovations in managing client information.

Our well-attended case study session featured Barry Smart, IT Director and Partner at leading financial consultancy Hymans Robertson, who took delegates through our new Client Information Management (CIM) system.
